Backpack Blessing: Sending Students Back to School with Prayer

On Sunday morning, colorful backpacks lined the front of the sanctuary as Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church gathered around its students and teachers for the annual backpack blessing — a beloved tradition that kicks off every new school year.

Blessed and Sent

Pastor Kay blessed the backpacks of children and Cindy Manning as they prepare to return to school this week. The ritual is simple but meaningful: bags in hand, the congregation prays for those heading back into the classroom to lift them up in prayer.

Together, the congregation prayed for wisdom, learning, and safety throughout the coming year. It’s a moment that reminds students they don’t walk through the school doors alone — their church family walks with them.

Faithful Students of Christ

The backpack blessing carries a deeper message: learning matters, and it belongs to our faith. As Proverbs 2:6 reminds us, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Every classroom, every textbook, and every question asked is an opportunity to grow in the wisdom God freely gives.

At TCLC, we believe we are all faithful students of Christ — from the youngest kindergartner to the lifelong learner sitting in the pew.
