Light Pierces the Dark
We don't find the Light; the Light finds us. Today’s devotion reminds us that Grace isn't a reward for our efforts—it's God's rescue mission in Christ.

Read Today’s Verse: John 1:1-9
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. — John 1:9
The Reflection
In the rhythms of my liturgical life, I often look for signs of God in our own progress or the strength of our convictions.
However, the Prologue of John shifts my gaze entirely away from my own efforts and toward the pre-existent Word.
Before we uttered a prayer or sought a solution, the Light was already in motion. This text serves as a profound reminder that we dwell in a darkness that we cannot pierce on our own. Left to our own devices, we are blind to the way forward, shadowed by the weight of our own shortcomings and the brokenness of the world.
But here is the Gospel promise: the Light does not wait for the world to become “bright enough” to receive it. Grace is not a reward for those who have cleared the clouds; it is the sun breaking through while it is still night.
John 1:1–9 reveals that our salvation is rooted in the “Word and Promise” of a God who speaks light into existence. We are saved by Grace alone, through the work of Christ, the Eternal Word, who entered our history to reclaim what was lost.
As we walk through Lent, we lean into the intellectual and spiritual comfort that our standing with God is not a fragile construction of our “works.” Instead, it is anchored in the objective reality of the Incarnation.
We are enlightened not because we have found a spark within ourselves, but because the True Light has found us. In this Word, we find the certainty of our rescue and the peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Pray with Me
Gracious God, we thank You that You did not leave us to wander in the darkness of our own making.
Forgive us when we try to manufacture our own light through our works, and remind us that our hope is found in Your Promise alone.
Let the Light of Christ shine in our hearts today, guiding us by Your Grace.
Amen.
