How soon after death do you go to heaven?

Jesus promised the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43), and Paul wrote that to depart this life is to be “with Christ” (Philippians 1:23). Lutherans hold that the faithful rest with Christ until the final resurrection, when body and soul are reunited at His return.
